On April, 15th the Viking Track Squads competed in the 50th running of the O’Neill Track & Field Invite. As a special historical note, Lue Grasser who ran for Rock County High School back in the 70’s still holds the record in the 800m run with a time of 2:02.3 seconds. The Wausa Boys finished 7th over all with 29 points in the 15 team Division II section and the Wausa Girls finished 10th over all with 16 points.
Scoring for the girls were Senior Laura Claussen who finished 3rd in the Shot Put with a throw of 33’-1/2”. Junior Peyton finished 5th in the 800 with a time of 2:39.9 and finished 2nd in the 1600m run with a time of 6:18.7 to finish out the girls scoring.
For the boys the scoring was lead by seniors Steve Ortmeier who finished 2nd in the 110HH with a time of 16.92 and finished 6th in the 300IH with a time of 46.44. Senior Jared Gillilan placed 1st in the 800 in division II with a time of 2:10.6 and his time was good enough to finish 4th overall in both divisions. Gillilan was also on the 3200m relay which finished 5th with a season best time of 9:25.7 with team mates Matt Wamberg, Kyle Schmacher, and Nate Story. Senior Nick DeBilzan had a great day in the throws as he finished 4th in the Shot Put with a throw of 40’-6 ¼” and he finished 4th in the Discus with a throw of 119’-2”.
At the Hartington Invitational held on Tuesday, April 20th, the Wausa Finished 9th with 19 points and the Wausa Boys finished 7th with 35 points. For the Girls, Senior Laura won the Shot Put with a Personal Best effort of 34’-10”. Junior Toni Lange placed 6th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 19.2 seconds. Junior Peyton Swanson placed 5th in the 800m run with a time of 2:48.3 and finished 5th in the 1600m run with a time of 6:26.4. The Wausa Girls 4x100m relay team of Bailey Rosberg, Leslie Kumm, Abbi Hegge, and Toni Lange finished 4th in that event with a time of 58.3 seconds.
Scoring for the boys were Senior Nick DeBilzan in the Shot Put with a throw of 39’-11” and Nick also finished 5th in the Discus with a season best performance of 123’-8”. Senior Steve Ortmeier placed 2nd in the 110HH with a season and personal best time of 16.7 and he also placed 4th in the 300m hurdles with a season best time of 46.00. Senior Jared Gillilan finished 2nd in the 400m dash with a time of 55.6 and he finished 3rd in the 800m run with a time of 2:15.2. Sophomore Nate Story placed 5th in the 1600m run with a season best time of 5:23.0. Rounding out the scoring for the boys was the 3200m relay with relay members Nate Story, Matt Wamberg, Kyle Schumacher, and Jared Gillilan with a time of 9:32.9.
Due to wet conditions and adverse weather, the Wausa Invitational which was scheduled to run on Saturday, April 24, 2010 was postponed until Monday May 3rd.
