Parents and Students of Wausa Public Schools.

Excessive snow days and winter only half way over has forced us to take President’s day and put it back on the schedule.  We are also taking away from teacher inservice time and adding 8th period back on Friday.  We are doing this for several reasons.

1. By adding that hour we gain back 1/3 to ½ a day every month, enabling us to catch up days without having to push into Saturdays or Easter Monday. 
2. In all probability, this will not be the last day that we let out for snow, so it will pad our days back.
3. Teachers need time back with their students for state and local standards to be met academically, and this enables them to have that contact time with their kids.
   There is also an early dismissal scheduled for April 1st.  (The Thursday before Easter)  As of now, we are changing that to a full day to try to pad Good Friday and Easter Monday. 

So far if the winds don’t die down and we don’t have school tomorrow we will have missed a total of a little over 8 school days.  We have built in 7 school days for unannounced whole school district closings, so if there is no school tomorrow we are 1 full day over the limit set by Rule 10 in Nebraska state statute. 

I have calculated that by putting Presidents day back in, and putting 8th period back in, we will gain back 3.5 days total.  This will put us 2.5 days below our previous limit of 7 built in snow days, but I doubt that this will be the last time we don’t have school due to weather. 

You also have to consider things like if a basketball team makes it to the state tournament, if you have further massive sick days or other items that may cause us to call off school for other events.   Hopefully this will keep Easter Monday and Saturdays off the table (mother nature needs to start helping our cause a bit.)  Once again thank you for your time and patience, keep warm everybody!
