The mighty V-8’s finally got our game in with the Coleridge Bulldogs on Tuesday the 13th of October. This game has been rescheduled 3 times and the 4th time we had to get it in. The weather was not great that night, but the mighty V-8’s played really well. This game could have been called the snow bowl. In the first half we scored a touchdown on a long run and a long pass play. The offence played great with the weather that we were in and the defense played even better, holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the first half. With the score at half Wausa 12 Coleridge 0. The 2nd half was much like the 1st half with the mighty V-8’s playing really good D and the offence moving the ball. We scored 2 more times in the 2nd half, but gave up 1 to Coleridge. The 2nd half was all about clock management trying to keep our offence on the field. The defense held the Bulldogs out of the end zone late in the game to lock up a victory. The final score was Wausa 24 Coleridge 6. With this victory it left us tied for 2nd in the league with Newcastle and Osmond.
The V-8’s then had a game with Osmond Tigers on Thursday the 15th of October after 1 days rest. This game also was cold but no snow for this one. In the first half the offence moved the ball but turnovers kept us out of the end zone. On defense we played really well but a couple of busted plays by Osmond got them into the end zone. The score at half was 14-0 with the Tigers with the lead. The 2nd half was a lot better for the V-8 we got a long run from Darren for the first score that made it 14-6. The D had a let down and let the Tiger put another score on the board making it 20 -6. The V-8’s came right back and score on a great run by Aidan, and converted the 2 point conversion to make it 20-14. The V-8s tried to stop the Tigers and get the ball back to try to tie or win but there was just not enough time on the clock and the final score ended 20-14 with the Tigers on top. This now left the V-8 in 4th place in the league with a 3-3 record and a rematch with Newcastle.
The final game was the tournament in Coleridge on Sunday the 18th of October. The V-8s had to have a lot of the younger kids step up, because of the flu. We were missing 4 of the starters and played a lot of younger kids. We struggled all game moving the ball and stopping Newcastle from scoring. We did put up 6 points on the board by a long run by Darren. The V-8 gave all that they could but 3 games in 5 days and 4 out with the flu left us tired and sore. The final ended up being 48-6.
I am so proud of every one of the players on the team, you worked hard and played hard. It was great to have us come back for a winless last year to winning 3 games this year. I think it is great that Wausa and some of the other schools have this program. Sounds like the kids played well and It looks like it takes a lot of work by parents and all others that help… Keep it going as it teaches the younger kids about team work. How to win like a winner and lose like a winner!! Congrats V8 team and all those involved
I wouls also like to add my “thanks” to all those who helped with the V-8 season. The kids really had fun and seemed to learn/ understand the plays. Thanks to Mert for getting the program going and to Jason for picking up when Mert’s health caused him to step back. Wausa is lucky to have so many volunteers/mentors for their youth!
This program has been so wonderful for my Son. He enjoyed it so much since the 4th grade, even if he didn’t get to play much this year due to his injury.
I also want to thank all of the coaches, the parents and our wonderful ambulance crew for making sure Brice was fine after his injury on the field. The team for their support, get well cards, snacks and of course the signed football that he will keep forever.
This program is so important to our community. Thank you all for the many hours you put into it!
Amen, Josh! You said it all! What great fun it was to watch these kids improve over the last 3 years! Many thanks coaches! This experience was priceless!
A special hats off to all those grandparents, aunts, and uncles who sat in the cold and snow week after week supporting our team! That was above and beyond the call of family duty:-)
