The youth football season will have their first practice on Aug. 18, 6:15 p.m.-dark at the local high school football complex. Practices will continue the normal format of meeting on Tues. and Thurs. at that same time, and Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-noon. This program is open to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. You may check out gear from coach Carlson’s home beginning Wed, Aug-12 after 5 PM, accompanied by at least one parent/legal guardian.
Player fees remain at $20 per player and $30 for two players, one family. The game-schedule will be posted when it becomes available. If you have conflicts with these dates/times, please call: 586-2555.
Even though some of the ‘dads’ will help coach when they’re available, it would be nice to have another couple of coaches to cover all the bases, and we’re not speaking baseball now! Pass the word and get ready for our 3rd Mighty Vikes campaign.
**NOTICE** There is a change to the schedule please see the comment for more information!

Wuddn’cha nowitt…I scheduled our first youth football practice a week ahead of the start of school thinking (without checking first, duh) there wouldn’t be any conflicts!
Well, duh? There is a conflict, whodanonitt?
So, Mighty Vikes youth football players/parents/coaches, WE will begin on Monday evening, 6:15-dark. When you check out gear from my house this will all be confirmed, along with the first couple of practices in helmets only. If you have any questions please call ’2555′. Sorry for the inconvenience but I was in Des Moines during the past week when I sent in the original post. Let me tell you about the 3′ high cornstalks after some devastating hail storms whipped through that state over the weekend…YIKES!
Mert, thanks for coaching again this year!Is that monday the 24th you’ll start practice?
Thanks Lisa! Somehow ‘Murphy’s Law’ has entered into our season before the season starts. I wanted to start on Tues, Aug. 18, however, was told that evening was dedicated for a fun night at the Elementary School’s open house. Did somebody say ‘Ice Cream’?
So, we switched to Monday evening, Aug. 17th, and then will get back to the normal Tues/Thurs practice schedule the following weeks. Our first two practices will be ‘helmets only’ for gear.
Players can check out gear from my house and just give me a call to make sure I’m home before you come over…disregard the ‘after 5 pm’ constraint as my schedule has opened a bit. Our League Directors meeting is on Saturday and our game-schedule will be printed next week.
Thanks Again…Go MIGHTY VIKES….!
Well, here we go again. After rescheduling our first practice to Mon/17th, I was given information that the Hunter Safety classes in Bloomfield were scheduled on that same Monday. Since 4-5 players attend that, I canceled that practice and decided to finally-start on Thurs/20th, with the second practice on Sat/22nd/10:30 a.m.
I also have to confess that the start of this season for me has been less than enthusiastic. Trying to recover from 8 broken ribs has taken plenty of wind from my sails. Now I have a new case of those dreaded, painful shingles that can give one the fits. Today I learned of having to remove a tumor from my kidney, so the summer has not been very pleasant.
These are not excuses, and like the rest of you folks, we all have to jump over some unsuspected hurdles in life every once in awhile. However, in earlier days, I could go on the ‘disabled list’ for a short week or two and return full strength. From sitting several hours each day in waiting rooms at Faith Regional, I have observed that those competitive playing years between 18-40 are just fleeting memories that offer no relief to pain or recovery.
Watching the facial expressions from folks awaiting a test for this and that leaves one to wonder how those golden, summer days have been scattered with a rusty field of debris in a game only the medical community can win.
This season for the Mighty Vikes will indeed be challenging for each of us. The will to prepare and practice with rigors of hard/sweaty work will pave the way to success…and this will carry with each player long after the games and seasons have passed. The coaches are challenged as much as the players to make sure each minute in practice is played like each minute of a game.
Now, where’d I place the Ibuprofen?
Well, Mert ! Sorry to here about you needing to have surgery. Hope all goes well for you and you have a speedy recovery. Those little guys are very eager to get started. But it will happen when it happens. Take time to heal yourself. We will be thinking of you.
Mert,
Take care of yourself and we’ll keep you in our prayers.
Those Mighty Vikes will see you on the sidelines and know they will be just thankful you can be there.
I’m sure the coaches will do the job they set out to complete.
Wausans has always be able to meet whatever is place in front of them.
On another subject, former Wausan, my brother,
Jay Helm is recuperating from Heart attack and triple bypass surgery on July 28th.
If all goes well he gets to go home tomorrow (21st) from the rehabitation center in Phoenix.
Sure he will be glad to get back to reading this website.
Thanks for your thoughts and cheers! I’m sorry to hear about Jay and his health struggles, but hope that the medical community can bring him back to a more quality standard of life. The Phoenix sun should melt his body back together when he gets home! If you post his email out here, there may be several wanting to connect with him.
We did have our first Mighty Vikes practice last eve and the players were all in good spirits. Each coach helped immensely and are fired up for the season to begin too.
Thanks again for your concerns. (My email is mcnlolo2@yahoo.com if you want to pass it on.) I remember Jay’s nickname as being ‘Hatch’. Not sure the origin for that but his Wausa home is now the vacant s.w. corner of the elmentary school’s playground a few steps west of the new playground equipment. A bit of real estate-trivia that few remember.
Wow Mert what a great memory you have. We moved out of the house in 1957 and I think the school purchased the property from Floyd (Swanson) and Mom.
I am not sure as I was in Missouri that summer and the next thing I knew Mom called and said we were living in Omaha. Like I had any control of those decisions at the age of 15. I completed my High School at Omaha Technical High. I was planning on attending the 50th reunion on August 13 but the ticker gave out first. Such is life, at least it’s fixed and I can plan on coming back to Wausa in October
I don’t recall where the name Hatch came from but I was called that for many years and Dennis Johnson still calls me that.
I am recovering from my by-pass surgery and should be relased from a rehab center later today.
Thanks for all the good wishes from family and friends.
Mert..
You are not the only one who remembers the “house on the corner”! It was almost every day , walking home from school that I was ” detained” by the aroma of fresh-baked cookies eminating from Opal’s kitchen !!! Of course.. being the curious youth that I was, I had to “check it out” and was properly rewarded with the best ginger snaps and chocolate chips one could ever wish for!!
Thanks for the memories Opal!!!
