Since the Nintendo Wii (pronounced we) gaming system – in which players jump, kick, punch, and move their way through video games rather than only sitting – launched in November 2006, articles have been popping up everywhere from Time to The Wall Street Journal about people using the Wii for fitness.
Wausa Schools has jumped on the bandwagon with there own Wii System for the activity of students. The Wii is has a revolutionary design by using the remote that comes with the system. The game tracks the movement of the remote and you are able to do games like boxing, golf, bowling and many others. A New game called Wii Fit always for fun using a balance board and several games that require balance.
In addition Dance Dance Revolution is a game that requires you to “dance” to the proper colors with the music. The more steps you get correct the better you score. These games are played in the gym at school during the kids’ regular PE period.
This is a great idea to keep kids busy and moving even if there isn’t enough room or the weather is cold outside.

Now, if Wii could all afford it. I still think it’s better for the sedendary kids if they just went outside and played similar games with real equipment. It becomes easier to ‘walk the talk’ later on when life gets more serious and the remote control is out of reach!
Okay, have fun playing those games outside when there’s a foot of snow. This Wii will give kids opportunities, which I think will benefit them in the long run. I also know from experience, that Wiis are very fun, and you absolutely DO get a workout when playing these games. Plus, we all know that once the playgrounds dry up, Mr. Fuller will get the kids outside and active, they’re not going to sit inside all day obviously. From what I have heard also, is that the Wii will be used for special ed. What a great way to learn special skills while having fun learning them. Great choice, Wausa School!
The Wii’s were a part of a grant from the ESU, they didn’t cost the District a dime. I commend Mr. Fuller for trying different things to get kids excited about physical activity. All you need to do is go into his PE class and see the neat things that they are doing. Great Job Mr. Fuller, thank you for all that you do!
