Our Journey Continues

Barney FamilyWe have gone from a good couple of weeks to a tough couple of weeks.  First thing we have learned when dealing with all of this is the tremendous ups and downs that battling cancer brings.

We were prepared to start the immunotherapy in Omaha the end of September, but unfortunately Carrie had another tumor pop up in her brain.  After being denied for treatment due to the tumor, we went directly to her Neurosurgeon in Omaha also.  She received a radiation treatment directly to the tumor using Stereotactic Radiosurgery, which is a very accurate treatment.

We then called the National Cancer Institute to make sure Carrie was still able to participate in the Clinical Trial.  They wanted her to come out ASAP to start the immunotherapy right away.  We had the plane tickets ordered and ready to leave when another roadblock hit us due to the Steroids she was on.  Steroids are used in surgery to prevent swelling, but a steroid is also an immune suppressor.  When going for immune therapy it makes it difficult to get any benefit when a steroid blocks the therapy from working.

So, we sat and waited for two weeks as she finished her steroid and now we are ready to travel again (we hope).  The plan is to fly to Maryland where the National Cancer Institute is and start some tests.  One will be a CT scan to see where the tumor on her adrenal gland is at.  If it has grown then they will remove the tumor and adrenal gland.  If it hasn’t grown then we will start immunotherapy.

My family would like to thank everyone for the continued support, cards and the simple “we are thinking of you” that we get from everyone almost every day.  I know how the power of prayer has brought us to this point and god is leading us to the right people at the right time.

    Josh & Carrie,
So very many people have been touched by the repeated tragic news and events in our small community in the past few months. I know I am one of them. The list of people to pray for gets longer and longer, yet through it all I see God doing wonderful and miraculous things.

Like many many others, we are praying for you every day, adding your names to the list of people we love who need prayers right now. God can do beautiful things to us in our moments of brokeness and utter dependence on Him. Hang in there, keep calling to Him, and watch what He can do. Not just for you, but through you…for a whole town.
