As many people know my beautiful wife Carrie Barney had a brain tumor and also a tumor on her adrenal gland discovered on May 21st of this year. These tumors were diagnosed as Metastatic Melanoma. Since that day we have had many ups and downs. On May 28th the tumor on Carrie’s brain was removed successfully with no visible lesions.
After recovering from her surgery we went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and started a pill form of chemotherapy called Temodar. She was on this therapy for two months. We traveled to Omaha on August 12th to see the neurologist with a very successful MRI showing no new tumors in her brain.
We then traveled to Rochester again for a PET scan of her whole body to check on new tumor growth. Unfortunately, the Doctors at Mayo determined that the chemotherapy was not working as the tumor on her adrenal gland had grown, but there were no other tumors elsewhere.
We will now travel to Bethesda, Maryland to visit with Doctors at the National Cancer Institute to check on clinical trials available for Carrie including a very promising immunotherapy. This therapy clones her cells and then injects billions of her cloned immune system back into her system to fight the cancer. (Click Here for article on the procedure)
This will be a 9 week process where we will be in Omaha and also Maryland for most of the time. We travel for our first visit on September 3rd with the hope of being accepted to a study that will help us fight this cancer.
Once again my family wishes to thank our community, family and friends for the tremendous support given to us during the past few months. The benefit held in Carrie’s honor will help us pay for travel and medical expenses and also keep our normal living expenses covered as we are away from our home and jobs. We feel the many prayers everyday and we continue to pray that she is accepted to a trial that will work.
Josh and Carrie, I just read the article about the treatment. This sounds so incrediable! Our prayers here will continue as they have! Keep strong! I would also like to say, you guys have 3 WONDERFUL children! Keep up the good job!

We are thinking of you each and every day and hold you very dear in our hearts and close in our prayers. Your journey continues to impact many as evidence by the picture that Lauryl took of the run/walk that was selected to go to the state fair. It has made even more of an impact and is now on display in the Offices of the Dean’s of Extension and the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources on UNL’s East Campus. The UNL Extension Display consists of 48 exhibit prints from the state fair. Footsteps in Faith continues to move foward. Hope and Happiness to you all.
