NPPD Progress from New Year’s Ice Storm

Representatives of Nebraska Public Power District announced on February 2nd that all five transmission lines supplying electric energy to Kearney, Neb. are back in service. This is a key milestone in the District’s efforts to recover from the New Year’s ice storm that knocked out four of the five lines and split NPPD’s transmission grid down the middle.

In addition, the utility reported it has now repaired and energized four east/west transmission paths across central Nebraska. This is enabling more power to flow and has allowed NPPD to slightly increase generation output from Gerald Gentleman Station, the state’s largest power plant.

With the return of the fifth transmission line into Kearney, NPPD is more than 36 percent of the way toward complete reconstruction of its damaged transmission system. As of this week, the utility has repaired 411 of 1,127 high-voltage power line structures severely damaged or destroyed by the ice storm.
